summat for the bairns

Introduced by Sue Loughlin community connector / workshop leader at Middlesbrough Art Week.

Mini MAW is dedicated to young audiences visiting the Middlesbrough Art Week (MAW). We love to see families at MAW and we have lots of free activities throughout the programme especially for kids and the young at heart!

Over the past few years, we have been developing the Mini MAW to help families and young people access contemporary art through fun, thoughtful and creative activities designed to let the imagination loose! In previous years we have worked on massive floor drawings, wall paintings and crafts, built sculptures from clay, paper and junk, carved soap, constructed towers and modeled dough, wandered, wondered and noticed…and generally had an amazing time exploring different materials and ideas in response to the themes of the MAW.

Our Mini MAW sessions are relaxed, welcoming and friendly. They work on drop-in basis, no bookings required and all of our events are free.

In 2023 we are expanding our Mini MAW to include more opportunities to create and play as we explore ideas linked to measuring and time. Look out for the ‘Summat for the Bairns’ sessions in the MAW programme and come along to enjoy exploring, imagining and making!

Sue Loughlin is an artist whose practice is rooted in installation, sculpture and painting, and encompasses education, social engagement, collaboration, and arts production.

“I explore ways of working which aim to elicit an understanding of the world in order to change it for the better. Envisioning and manifesting a better future is dependent upon our collective creativity, and I aim to engage people in this process through questioning the status quo. My work is informed by alternative approaches to creative education and working with families, children and young people is central to my practice. I am passionate about the development of creative thinking and the many ways that creative engagement benefits society as a whole. Creativity is vital to bringing about positive change.”
