Sabby Jamal

Sabeera Jamal born in Perlis, Malaysia and growing up in the UK her influences of her work come from both cultural upbringings and experiences. Jamal explores sculptural installations created from recycled material, favouring materials used by the refugees she lived with in Calais.

The versatility and recycle-ability of these materials is highly valued by Jamal. The materials from each of her works is re-used which shows, as the materials build up signs of wear. Her most recent installation ‘Kingdom Malaya’ is not only influenced by her dual heritage of Malaysia and Britain, but also from her work with local schools.

Recycling wood and cardboard to make mini sculptures of Malaysian and British houses she creates a village where both her cultural identities exist. Jamal has also made a 11ft Malaysian house alongside the village so the audience could interact and go in and out of the house, her intention is to make her work relatable, nostalgic, child-like and imaginative for the public taking people back to childhood.
