Christine Walker

Christine Walker is a recently qualified postgraduate in Ceramics from the University of Sunderland where she gained a distinction.  Her undergraduate is in Fine Art from Coventry Polytechnic awarded in 1989.

After some early success as a self-employed artist, she took a break to have a family and worked for 26 years in Social Care settings, experiences that have had a long term impact on her work.  She is a Director of Going for Independence, a community interest company set up to support disabled people through advice and community based arts and social activities.  As a coordinator for Northern Potters Association she supports the development of ceramics in the Northeast.

Her work embraces the perceived hierarchy between craft, that which focuses on materiality and functionality, and high art objects created primarily for intellectual and aesthetic purposes.  The work embraces the malleability, humbleness, and handmade qualities of clay in an attempt to challenge this divide creating a language to express her concerns.  She encourages the viewer to find something that resonates within themselves, interpreting the forms and images in a certain way based on their own preconceptions, conscious and unconscious judgements to attribute meaning.
