Christie Chan
Christie Chan is a Hong Kong-born artist and writer based in Newcastle. Her art practice is cross-disciplinary in nature, often interweaving elements of painting, creative writing, digital media and found objects.
Through her work, she is interested in creating narratives that reflect on cultural identities, migration, and escapism in society. She holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from Newcastle University, where she graduated with distinction.
Christie has exhibited her work publicly in Hong Kong and the UK, with recent group exhibitions including ‘NAE Open’ (2023) at New Art Exchange, ‘BALTIC Open Submission’ (2021) at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and ‘TCH Open Exhibition’ (2021 and 2022) at The Customs House.
Her writing has been featured in Corridor8 and Social Art Library. She is also one of the two co-founders of Art Matters Now, a digital technology-driven curatorial initiative that engages artists and the public in creative discussions about social issues.
Christie was a Sunderland Culture Creative Development Fellow in 2021 and the recipient of a number of grants, which include Arts Council England’s DYCP grant (2022), CLLD Creative Industries Grant (2022), and CVAN North East Creative Space Residency (received as Art Matters Now in 2020).
