About the Show.
In Hand Gesture Film, Stobbart isolates the gestures that accompany everyday conversation. Drawn from filmed exchanges of people talking one-to-one and reconstructed through a score-like process, the work presents a sequence of different people’s hand gestures, moving through a silent vocabulary of communication. Detached from speech, and viewed from below, these familiar gestures become both expressive and ambiguous, revealing the extent to which meaning is carried through movement as much as spoken language.

Kate Stobbart is a Newcastle-based artist whose practice includes video, text-based art, live-events, performance and installation. Since graduating with a BA in Fine Art at Newcastle University, followed by MFA and practice-led PhD, she has developed a research-based practice that explores the relationship between people, place and collective experience.
Her work has been presented across the UK and internationally including exhibitions at Nottingham Contemporary, The Centre of Contemporary Art (Tbilisi), Zendai Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai) and festivals in Sweden, Austria and France. She has also exhibited widely across the North-East with recent presentations at The Late Shows, 36 Gallery, XL Gallery, and The Bridge Gallery alongside a performance in Jeremy Deller’s MLK 1967 as part of Freedom City. Solo rejections include Latitude Festival, Artangel UK, Madrid Abierto and SPILL National Platform London.
