Transactionland
Transactionland
About the Show.
It’s shopping, but not as you know it! Call in at Transactionland, a thoroughly unusual high-street retail emporium. This Middlesbrough Art Week, Transactionland will be open for a bit of browsing and a spot of shoplifting.
Transactionland is a response to a collective fear of talking about the economy - both ‘The Economy’, and the many other economies small and large we interact with every day. It aims to be a brave space for exploring alternatives and having some tongue-and-cheek fun with Very Serious Stuff.
Hosted by artist-turned-shopkeeper Rachael Clerke, Transactionland rejects the idea that economics is not for the likes of you or me: why leave it to the men in suits to design the systems that rule our lives?
Transactionland invites you to shop 'til you drop alongside a packed programme of conversations, workshops, performances and more, with visiting artists working the tills.

Rachael Clerke is a Bristol-based artist working across many mediums. They make generous artworks that sit somewhere on the edge of live art and community infrastructure; playful experiments about what real life might look like if we were less concerned with what real life 'should' look like. Rachael is currently working on the 10 year series Businesses (2019-2029). Businesses is an experiment to see if art can do business. It is an irreverent yet earnest attempt to understand, expose and co-opt systems of money, trade and exchange.
