About the Show.

This intense video portrait draws on over 100 hours of documentation recorded during Charlie Murphy's infamous participatory 'kiss-in' events which toured galleries, museums and arts festivals across the UK and internationally between 1999 and 2009.

At these events Murphy collected detailed casts of the inside of many different people's kisses to create a unique survey of the textures , sculptural forms and dynamics of kisses from the inside while capturing participants' responses to this process from the outside through video documentation.

Murphy uses a quick setting dental alginate to make direct impressions of couples and group kisses. Each couple is asked to hold their pose for over 90 seconds whilst the material sets, which sets an uncomfortable duration of time in which a fascinating range of responses and non verbal communications unfold. Selected from over 10 years worth of footage, this video presents some of the most intriguing and mesmerising behaviours revealed during the kiss casting sessions. Integrating excerpts of dialogue with recordings of kissing taken from inside the mouth, composer Jorge Queijo's score conceptualises the sound of kissing with electronic, choral and cello instrumentation.
