Rupert Ludlow Philbrick
I am a multi-disciplinary artist and community practitioner specialising in music, film and performance. I have lived and work in Upper Teesdale, County Durham since 2012. In this time, I have worked extensively as a commissioned artist, freelance facilitator & creative producer for art organisations, charities, school & community groups across the NE (see website for details); completing an MRes Art at Northumbria University in 2016-17.
My practice is rooted in the use of creative and participatory methods, that champion co- operative enquiry and production between professional and non-professional artists. My work revolves around processes of place-making and notions of home, creating work that aims to uncover a better understanding of who we are and where we come from.
There is a reverence for nature embedded in the folklore of Britain and across the globe, an audible warning to take heed of your actions against it. As such, folk tradition, ritual and seasonal customs figure as recurring methods and motifs within my work as a reminder of the delicacy of nature & the growing threat of climate change.
Through exploring the cultural heritage of Upper Teesdale & beyond with participants, we have mapped webs of individual and collective memory, using these discoveries as the catalyst for creativity and toying with the fabric of time through processes of modern mythmaking; adding new chapters to the storied landscapes that surround us through acts of collaborative creativity.
